Small and Medium Enterprise Statistics for the UK and Regions

IMPORTANT: This page will no longer be updated but has been retained to avoid broken links.

These statistics are now published by the Enterprise Directorate of the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform. The latest information can be accessed at http://stats.berr.gov.uk/ed/sme.

Data tables show the number of businesses, employment and turnover, in each category, broken down by the number of employees. Table 1 shows private sector / Government / non-profit, Table 2 shows companies / sole proprietorships / partnerships, and Tables 3-6 show breakdowns by the Standard Industrial Classification, with 6 the most detailed. Where regional data are available, they appear in Tables 7 to 23.

We also publish statistical press releases that discuss the statistics, and a methodology note describing how they are produced.
