Why is it significant?

Quality of life can be an important determinant of economic performance as well as being a key goal of economic activity.  It can be an important influence on firms’ location decisions and on a nation’s ability to attract and retain key knowledge workers. 

How does the UK perform?

The UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs’ (DEFRA) Quality of Life Indicators show that progress has been made on a number of indicators, but that the UK ‘could do better’. This is reinforced by the results of a recent IMD survey of business perceptions of the quality of life which shows the UK lagging France, Germany, Canada and the US
