Why is it significant?
Efficient labour markets and flexible workers are necessary for a successfully functioning economy.

 
How does the UK perform? 
Comparisons of unemployment rates across the G7 show the UK has performed extremely well over the last few years (chart 6.4.1), with the UK’s unemployment continuing to be well below the rate in other major European countries. The comparison of long-term unemployment (chart 6.4.2) shows that the US and Canada have the lowest proportion of long-term unemployed. The UK performs well against the other major European countries.
