Why is it significant?

International technological alliances between firms are another way of accessing global knowledge.

How does the UK perform?

The UK was ahead of its major competitors in terms of the number of international technological alliances over the period 1989-98. However, our performance in terms of technological alliances between domestic firms is not so impressive. Despite our lead over Germany, France, Canada and Italy, the UK still lags behind the US and Japan (Chart 4.9).
