4.7 Joint publishing by universities and industry

Why is it significant?

Joint authorship of scientific and technical articles by universities and businesses is one indicator of informal networks through which knowledge is passed between the science base and industry.

How does the UK perform?

Joint publishing with universities has been increasing (chart 4.7).  The pharmaceuticals and chemical sectors dominate, accounting for just under 40 per cent of joint papers published.  Publishing in defence-related sectors, including electronics and electricity, has declined.  However, almost all industries publish papers, and in industrial sectors collaborative publications out-number non-collaborative ones.
