4.3 Proportion of firms that innovate

The Community Innovation Survey provides another angle on measuring innovation by asking firms about their innovation performance.

How does the UK perform?

Over half of UK manufacturers are classified as innovators, which is above the European average.  In services, the proportion of firms who innovated was in line with the European average (Chart 4.3.1).  However, compared with other European countries, the UK has a below average proportion of ‘novel innovating’ enterprises that produce products or services that are new to their market (Chart 4.3.2).
