Why is it
significant?
Enhancing skill levels can only be partially addressed through curriculum changes in schools and universities. Continuing education and training, outside compulsory formal education, also allows individuals to refresh or complement previous education and training. How does the UK perform? The
International Adult Literacy Survey shows the UK performing ahead of the
US but behind Canada for all continuing education and training (Chart
3.3.1). The proportion of economically active adults qualified to level 3 and 4 respectively continues to increase, towards the national targets of 50% and 28% respectively (Chart 3.3.2).
