3.14 Government spend on R&D

Why is it significant?

The Government is a lead investor in basic scientific research and has a key role in creating the UKs science capability.

How does the UK perform?

UK government spending on R&D per worker fell in real terms between 1991 and 1999.  This trend was apparent in the majority of G7 countries.  The UKs performance remains behind our major international competitors (Chart 3.14).
